2027-2028 FIAS Fellowships

From April 23, 2026 to June 23, 2026

 

The FIAS (French Institutes for Advanced Study) Fellowship Programme, coordinated by the RFIEA network, offers 10-month research residencies (from September to June) at one of seven Institutes located in Aix-Marseille, Cergy, Orléans-Tours (Val de Loire), Lyon, Montpellier, Nantes, and Paris.

This programme is intended for high-level international researchers wishing to develop an original research project in a stimulating interdisciplinary environment at a leading French academic institution.
For the 2027–2028 academic year, the Collegium de Lyon is offering three fellowships, each including a 10-month work contract from September to June.

The call is open to all disciplines within the broad fields of the humanities and social sciences (HSS). Projects at the intersection of HSS and other scientific domains are also eligible. In line with the Université de Lyon’s new interdisciplinary institutes, special attention will be given to projects touching upon one of the following thematic areas:
-          One Health Studies,
-          Food and Nutrition Studies,
-          Transition Studies (with a focus on urban development and biodiversity),
-          Artificial Intelligence. 

 
Conditions

FIAS fellowships offer the following conditions:
- a work contract with a net monthly salary of €2,200,
- health coverage,
- a fully furnished and equipped appartment on the ENS de Lyon campus,
- a €2,500 research and training budget,
- a travel expense support package.

The Collegium de Lyon residence is located on the campus of the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon. Fellows enjoy a furnished apartment, a dedicated workspace, and privileged access to the university library. Optional French as a Foreign Language classes are available on site. The Gerland neighborhood has excellent metro and tram connections, offering quick access to all Lyon university campuses.
 

Eligibility

The FIAS candidates must fulfill all the eligibility requirements to be considered:

- Degree and experience
At the time of the application deadline, researchers will have to be in possession of a doctoral degree plus 2 years of full-time research experience after the degree (PhD training period will not be considered in the calculation of experience).

- Mobility
Researchers from all countries and nationalities are eligible to the Programme. Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in France for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the application deadline.

- Disciplines
The FIAS programme is primarily designed for researchers in the Social Sciences and the Humanities (SSH), but interdisciplinary projects connected to other fields are also welcome.


How to apply

Application must be submitted exclusively via the FIAS website during the application period. 
Applicants are required to submit the following documents (in English only):
- the completed online application form;
- a detailed curriculum vitae, including a list of publications and the contact information for three scholars familiar with your academic work;
- a copy of the PhD diploma in PDF format;
- a detailed research proposal of no more than 5 pages, plus a 1-page bibliography;
- a selection of three key publications (articles or book chapters).

 

Timeline:

- 25 June 2026 at 6 pm (French time): application deadline.
- July 2026: eligibility check.
- August to November 2026: double external peer review.
- December 2026: preselection by the FIAS Selection Committee.
- January-February 2027: selection of the fellows by the Collegium's Scientific Advisory Board.
- March 2027: announcement of the selection results.
- 1 September 2027: arrival of the fellows.
