An Institute for Advanced Study at the heart of France's second-largest research ecosystem

Like other Institutes for Advanced Study (IASs) around the world, the Collegium de Lyon welcomes researchers from all over the world for one or two semesters in order to stimulate innovative research in all fields of knowledge and interdisciplinary thinking in connection with the Lyon-Saint-Etienne research ecosystem.

Following in the footsteps of pioneering Institutes such as Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study in the US, the Collegium de Lyon's primary objective is to create a scientific community of excellence each year, bringing together researchers with diverse backgrounds, ambitious projects, and an openness to interdisciplinary thinking. The essential mechanism for achieving this goal is to invite fellows to stay in the same place for an extended period of one or two semesters. Freed from their usual teaching or research management obligations, they are able to pursue in a high-quality environment the research to which they wish to devote themselves full-time, either individually or in collaboration. On this basis, the Collegium de Lyon was created in 2006, focusing on the two essential characteristics that define any IAS: total openness to international collaboration and the pursuit of active interdisciplinarity.

The Collegium's ambition is to welcome the most original and ambitious projects, as long as they are linked to the research potential of the Lyon/Saint-Étienne academic site and to one or more of our research units. There are no restrictions in terms of discipline, theme or cultural context. Applications can therefore cover a very wide range of research topics. We are confident that during their stay, successful candidates will be able to create new opportunities for collaboration among residents and with researchers at the University of Lyon.
