SCIENTIFIC PROJECT
Quantum algorithms like those of Shor and Grover could compromise the security mechanisms used today, particularly public-key systems (RSA, ECC), and reduce the robustness of symmetric systems. This situation is particularly concerning for the Internet of Things (IoT). Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) aims to design systems resistant to both classical and quantum computers. Several approaches exist, including algorithms based on Euclidean lattices, error-correcting codes, hash functions, isogenies, and multivariate systems.
However, these solutions were not initially designed for constrained environments like those of the IoT, which poses significant challenges in terms of performance and deployment. The project proposes to study and optimize PQC algorithms, particularly those currently being standardized by NIST, to adapt them to the specific constraints of IoT devices. Two major challenges have been identified: (1) optimizing performance (computation time, memory, energy consumption) while ensuring a high level of security, and (2) the gradual migration of current systems to post-quantum solutions, given hardware limitations and the complexity of existing infrastructures. Resistance to side-channel attacks is also a crucial research focus.
