The presentation, based on the forthcoming book Unmaking Americans, describes the history of citizenship stripping in the United States through the voices of those who lost their citizenship.
The central claim of the book is that citizenship stripping was used throughout U.S. history to deprive disfavored groups and individuals of their civil and political rights, as well as to shape public perceptions of who counted as a “real American.” The presentation concludes by comparing French and U.S. citizenship stripping and citizenship acquisition policies, and explains how each nation’s government attempts to shape national identity through its control over citizenship.
