Brady Wagoner: Making meaning of memorials - Materialising grief and memory

Memorials are materialisations of collective memory, oriented not only to the past but also as a statement to the future. While much has been written on the architectural and urban qualities of memorials far less has been done to explore how people make sense of and interact with them. This project uses an innovative subject camera methodology, which records first person audio and video, to analyse people’s situated and ongoing experience of memorial sites. Using this methodology, this presentation will contrast traditional memorials (focused on heroes and victories, using a figurative style) with ‘counter’ memorials (focused on victims and loss, using an abstract and minimalist form).
