Jean-Luc Pinol: The deportation of French jews (1942 – 1944). A cartographic approach
On The November 27, 2019
3 Allée de Fontenay, 69007 Lyon
From 1942 to 1944, 76 rail convoys were chartered to deport 74.000 jews – including more than 11.400 children - from France to Nazi death camps. Jean-Luc Pinol proposes a new reading of this history through maps.
J-L Pinol began to geolocate and analyze the mass of personal data gathered in the Mémorial de la déportation des Juifs de France (Memorial of deportation of jews in France) established by Serge Karsfeld, in order to study what we learn from the setting into space of these journeys. Map after map, he tells the story of the deportation and all the persecutions of the jews in France in a new way, highlighting the interferences between the German authorities and the French state.
