F.W.J. SCHELLING ET VICTOR COUSIN : L’HISTOIRE D’UNE CONTROVERSE

Le projet s’intéresse à la rencontre philosophique entre F.W.J. Schelling et Victor Cousin en 1833-1835. Il intègre la préhistoire de la rencontre (l’appropriation croissante de l’idéalisme allemand par Cousin dans les années 1820) et ses répercussions (les réactions des lecteurs allemands et français). Dans sa préface aux Fragments philosophiques en 1833, Cousin s’est défendu contre les accusations d’avoir trop dépendu des sources allemandes. Un an plus tard, Schelling a donné une évaluation de ce que Cousin lui doit (Vorrede zu einer philosophischen Schrift des Hrn. Cousin) —cette évaluation étant traduit en français à deux reprises en 1835 par Willm et par Ravaisson. Cousin a répondu lui-même, et d’autres en France (Ravaisson) et Allemagne (Wendt, Hinrichs) ont participé au débat. Cette controverse a été très importante pour les intellectuels français et allemands dans les années 1830. Ce projet étudie en détail sa genèse et son héritage.

BIOGRAPHIE

Daniel Whistler est maître de conférences en philosophie à l’Université de Londres Royal Holloway (Grande-Bretagne). Il a obtenu un master et un doctorat de philosophie à l’Université d’Oxford et a été chercheur au WWU Münster (Allemagne) avec une bourse de la Fondation Humboldt. Il mène des recherches sur l’idéalisme allemand, en particulier la philosophie de Schelling, et est en train d’achever un livre sur François Hemsterhuis. Il travaille aussi sur la philosophie de la religion et les philosophies du symbole.
