"Media Sexism in Politics and Electoral Consequences: A Comparative Analysis of Male and Female Legislators in East Asia"

This project examines how media coverage differs between male and female legislators in East Asia, specifically South Korea and Taiwan. Media sexism is a widespread issue where female politicians are often underrepresented and subject to negative or stereotypical portrayals focusing on personal lives and appearance rather than policies or qualifications. This project offers an original approach by conducting a comprehensive comparative analysis of male and female legislators and investigating the specific impact of gendered media bias on election nominations and voter choices. By analyzing extensive media data for all elected legislators in South Korea and Taiwan from 2008 to 2024, this project creates a unique resource for future research. The potential societal impact includes highlighting challenges faced by female legislators due to media bias, advocating for fairer media practices, and ultimately contributing to greater gender equality in politics by empowering aspiring female politicians with bias-fighting strategies. This research also advances academic understanding of media sexism in politics within Korean and Taiwanese studies.
