« Dead wood in rivers is an integral part of aquatic ecosystems and has an impact on a variety of disciplines. While it is as important to ecosystems as geomorphology, it can also pose a natural hazard. Over the past 30 years, various laboratories in Lyon have conducted research on the dynamics of wood in rivers from geomorphological, fisheries, technological and societal perspectives, establishing Lyon as a hub for such projects. Following his first visit to Lyon in 2010, Professor Boivin has developed complementary expertise in Quebec and Canada in relation to river wood dynamics over the past 15 years. He was the main co-organiser of the latest Wood in World Rivers – 5 conference, which took place in Gaspé, Quebec, in June 2024. Several projects related to wood in rivers are currently underway in his research laboratory and within the Research Chair on Exploited Aquatic Species (CREAE), of which he is co-holder. The objective of this webinar is to present the results of 15 years of research on river wood dynamics in Quebec, to showcase ongoing projects within research units in Quebec, and to present the Quebec guide on river wood dynamics and the associated decision-making tool. Finally, the webinar will present the work currently being developed with collaborators in France.
