"Connected Riverscapes: hydrological connectivity and biogeomorphic succession in semiarid floodplains"

How do hydrologic connectivity and biogeomorphic succession interact to shape semiarid riverscapes? Along the Naryn River in Central Asia, this project investigates how natural river dynamics influence floodplain succession trajectories across space and time. It combines field observations with digital geomorphometry and satellite imagery time-series analysis to link local ecological and geomorphic processes to long-term landscape development. By scaling these relationships from individual field sites to entire river corridors, the project aims to reveal how patterns of hydrological connectivity govern vegetation establishment, succession and landscape change. The integrative approach contributes to a process-based understanding of dynamic floodplains and demonstrates how field and remote-sensing methods can be combined for interdisciplinary riverscape research.

BIOGRAPHY

Magdalena Lauermann is a researcher at the Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and the University of Würzburg. Her research addresses the question of how hydrologic connectivity and biogeomorphic succession jointly drive the development of riverscapes.
