The aim of this article is to clarify the notion of exercise in Montaigne's philosophy, and thus his claim that his "philosophy is in action". It is suggested that there is an evolution in this notion. Initially, Montaigne proposed meditative practices similar to spiritual exercises. Then the exercises are conceived as experiences similar to death. Finally, for Montaigne, all the actions of life become exercises in which his philosophy is inscribed.
