The 'Soirées' of the Collegium de Lyon
Once a month the Collegium de Lyon organizes unformal scientific events during the evening, the Soirées.
Intended for the fellows of the Collegium de Lyon and their families, they are also open to the scientific partners and more generally to the academic community of Lyon/Saint-Etienne. One or several guests (a laboratory, a research team, a service from the Université de Lyon, a researcher, a former fellow of the Collegium de Lyon, etc.) present their scientific activities or a topical issue.
The Soirées of the Collegium de Lyon are followed by a cocktail dinner.

- 18 MARAnne Verjus : What did it take to be a radical and pragmatic feminist two hundred years ago? The strange case of the Chevalier Lawrence (1773-1840)
Between 1773 and 1840 lived a man called James Henry Lawrence. The son of Jamaican planters who owned hundreds of slaves, he was born and educated to be a member of the British gentry: writing poetry, traveling and living off the wealth inherited from his parents. He could have ended in the army, like his younger brother, or he could have been a rich merchant, or a politician, like another of his brothers. But Lawrence decided he would do something very different: at the age of 20, he would write a feminist utopia. Whether he wanted it or not, this utopia, called “The Empire of the Nairs”, would become the most radical feminist utopia of his time. We’ll follow Lawrence in his utopia, trying to understand what it took, not so much to be so radical, but to think out of the box while dealing with humans as they are.
- 19 FEBMarie Claire Villeval : Unethical behavior, social norms and incentives
Dishonesty takes a variety of forms (tax evasion, corruption, book cooking, etc.) and it has major implications for economic growth and trust in society. The standard "economics of crime" approach, according to which individuals misbehave as a result of the comparison of costs and benefits, has shown its limits to analyze decision making in the ethical domain.
- 15 JANAnne Lagny: The notion of Heimat, between left and right…
Several political and cultural events (Edgar Reitz's Die andere Heimat, far right-wing speeches, the insertion of the word "Heimat" in the name of the German Ministry of the Interior, Nora Krug's best-selling Graphic Novel, Belonging, in 2018) have put the notion of Heimat back at the center of the debate on German identity, while revealing contradictory issues.
- 18 DECCathy Cohen : The impact of exposure on bilingual development and identity
Numerous factors have been shown to contribute to dual language acquisition and development in bilingual children, including the quantity and quality of exposure to each language. While studies reported in the literature have uncovered certain tendencies, the nature of the contribution of language exposure remains unclear. Indeed, since family language practices are interwoven with families’ language biographies, bilingual children’s exposure and language experiences are prone to variation over time.
- 27 NOVJean-Luc Pinol: The deportation of French jews (1942 – 1944). A cartographic approach
From 1942 to 1944, 76 rail convoys were chartered to deport 74.000 jews – including more than 11.400 children - from France to Nazi death camps. Jean-Luc Pinol proposes a new reading of this history through maps.
