To code or not to code: The school curriculum facing the digital revolution

Simone Martini, Aurélien Belot and John Hamman, Collegium de Lyon fellows, lead a discussion on the reasons for the trend to introduce computer sciences in many national school systems and under very different terminologies.

During the last years several countries (United States of America, United Kingdom, France, Italy, etc.) started a debate on introducing some computer science education at all primary and secondary education levels, starting with elementary schools. Buzzwords for this may be “coding”, “computational thinking”, “digital literacy”, etc. The specific details of what and when to teach, and to whom, remain vague, and varied.

The presentation, followed by a discussion will cover aspects such as:
  • the reasons for this trend, the (very different) meanings that are attached to the terms above ("coding" means certainly something different from “digital literacy”), and the possible choices for schools and national school systems.
  • the point of view of a statistician on "why learning coding would be a good idea in our new world facing a (sort of) data revolution".
