An Institute Based in an Area of Excellence

The Université de Lyon

An IAS may be either an independent research center or a university-based institute. The Collegium de Lyon follows the model of the University Based Institute for Advanced Study (UBIAS). The IAS does not impose predetermined research topics and is scientifically and financially independent from any specific university or school. It is a part of the Université de Lyon as a whole and not affiliated to any of the many institutions of the academic site.

The Université de Lyon is a world-class academic site of excellence. It is located at the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, in Lyon & Saint-Étienne. The fellows of the Collegium de Lyon are hosted at a dynamic, attractive academic site that provides outstanding education and research, where they can interact with 172 laboratories and 6,800 researchers and research lecturers.

In 2017, the Université de Lyon was awarded the Initiative d’excellence (IDEX) label, establishing it as a world-class research university. IDEX is a call for projects launched by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and the Commissariat-General for Investment (CGI) under the Investments for the Future program. It aims to identify approximately ten large French universities as world-class centers of excellence, thereby improving the attractiveness of France and its scientific standing in the world. The Université de Lyon was awarded the "Excellence Initiative" label in February 2017. The Collegium de Lyon receives support from the IDEXLYON to carry out its invitation policy of foreign researchers.

Among applications of equal scientific quality, those that match the major scientific fields of the Université de Lyon and that offer long-term collaboration perspectives are favored.

Local Public Authorities

The Collegium de Lyon also works in close collaboration with local public authorities in the Lyon and Saint-Etienne area. This collaboration involves the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region as well as the Lyon Metropolis. Starting in 2016, fellows have been provided accommodation in a luxury residence built as part of a contract between the French state and the region; the project was managed by the Lyon Metropolis. Within the framework of an annual agreement between the Université de Lyon and the Lyon Metropolis, the Collegium de Lyon is provided with funding dedicated to strengthening its international outreach and organizing scientific events. The Institute’s invitation policy is supported by funding from the region, within the scope of an invitation program for international researchers.

Chair of the Lyon Metropolis

Starting in September 2018, a Chair of the Lyon Metropolis will host one researcher specialized in Urban studies, in partnership with the Laboratory of Excellence (LabEx) Intelligences des mondes urbains (IMU) and in the framework of the annual agreement between the Université de Lyon and the Lyon Metropolis.

Cooperation in Applied Computer Science

Following a successful proposal in a call for projects by the Rhône-Alpes-Auvergne region in 2017, a program to fund international academic and scientific cooperation now supports two fellows specialized in applied computer science per year, in partnership with the LabEx Mathématiques et informatique de Lyon (MiLyon) and the Entrepôts, Représentation et Ingénierie des Connaissances (ERIC) laboratory.
