Shawn McHale : "Cosmopolitan peasants? Understanding cultural upheaval in a corner of 20th-century Vietnam"

As part of the Eurasia lecture series organised by the UFR des Langues at the Université Lumière Lyon 2, Shawn McHale, Professor of History at George Washington University (Washington, DC, USA) and researcher in residence at the Collegium de Lyon, will give a lecture entitled "Cosmopolitan peasants? Understanding cultural upheaval in a corner of 20th-century Vietnam".

 

Every Thursday, from 4pm to 6pm, we invite you on an intellectual journey. Experienced researchers and emerging talents will share their analyses of a wide range of subjects, including art, history, linguistics, law, anthropology and sociology. This year's focus is on China, Japan and Vietnam, offering insights into rich and complex cultures.

Shawn McHale is Professor of History at George Washington University (Washington, DC, USA). He holds a Ph.D. in Southeast Asian history from Cornell University (USA). He is the author of two books on the cultural and political history of Vietnam under French colonial rule. The recipient of numerous research grants, his current research focuses on Vietnamese research on 'original Buddhism' in Asia in times of peace and war, 1900-1989.
He is a 2024-25 Fellow of the Collegium de Lyon.
