Maria De Jesus - Migration status: Key determinant of the health and integration of migrant populations in France
On The January 27, 2020
Salle de réunion - Allée A - 1er étage
Based on her qualitative and quantitative data collection thus far, she will highlight the precursory conditions that drive migration, and how post-migration, paradoxically, certain migrant groups are exposed to increased health risks and negative health outcomes.
The presentation has several aims. First, Dr. De Jesus will describe the phenomenon of migration in France from a historical perspective to the current situation, as well as several theories to understand migrant health from a multifaceted prism and not simply from a biomedical one. She will then describe her study on migration and health, which is situated at the intersection of urban studies, health and immigration policy, and global public health. Adopting the World Health Organization’s social determinants of health conceptual framework, the main aim of the research is to examine the individual, intermediary, and structural determinants of health.
Maria De Jesus is a professor and multidisciplinary scholar in the area of global health at the School of International Studies at American University (AU) in Washington, DC and a 2019-2020 Collegium de Lyon Fellow.
