René Venegas, researcher in residence at the Collegium, will present his research: ‘From corpus linguistics to PEUMO: empirical evidence of a didactic intervention for thesis writing in engineering ’ at the seminar of the Syntax, Meaning and Textualities team at the ICAR laboratory.

As part of the research seminar organised by the Institut d'Asie Orientale (IAO), Shawn McHale, Professor of History at George Washington University (Washington, DC, USA) and currently in residence at the Collegium de Lyon, will present his research on "Peace, Violence and the Transformation of Vietnamese Buddhism (1900-1989)".

As part of the GRHis/Triangle seminar "Libéraux et socialistes face à la violence (1889-1989)", Tommaso Giordani, historian in residence at the Collegium, will present his research on "Socialism without revolution: the tactical role of violence in Georges Sorel".

As part of the seminar organised by the Triangle laboratory's ‘Post-Western Sociology in Europe and in China’ unit, Svetla Koleva, sociologist in residence at the Collegium, will give a lecture entitled ‘De la production de savoirs sociologiques dans un monde social totalitaire’ (On the production of sociological knowledge in a totalitarian social world).

As part of the ‘Problems of Modernity’ seminar, organised by IHRIM's ‘Dire la Santé Mentale’ team (DSM), Lena Magnone, researcher in residence at the Collegium, will give a talk on her two-volume monograph ‘Freud's Emissaries. The Transfer of Psychoanalysis Through the Polish Intelligentsia to Europe 1900-1939’.

As part of the "Problems of modernity" seminar organised by Labex COMOD and IRHIM, Lena Magnone, researcher in residence at the Collegium, will present her research on "Modernity, modernism(s), modernist movements in literary periodisation".

The "Entering Literature" conference will look at the places where people learn and gain recognition for the craft of writing, attitudes and self-narratives, and the forms, genres and preferred media for becoming a writer.

As part of the seminars organised by the Department of International History at the London School of Economics, Shawn McHale, Professor of History at George Washington University (Washington, DC, USA), currently in residence at the Collegium de Lyon, will give a lecture entitled "Learning the Wrong Lessons About Pacification: The First Indochina War, 1945-54"

As part of the Eurasia lecture series organised by the UFR des Langues at the Université Lumière Lyon 2, Shawn McHale, Professor of History at George Washington University (Washington, DC, USA) and researcher in residence at the Collegium de Lyon, will give a lecture entitled "Cosmopolitan peasants? Understanding cultural upheaval in a corner of 20th-century Vietnam".

Shawn McHale, Professor of History at George Washington University (Washington, DC, USA) and researcher currently in residence at the Collegium de Lyon, will present a series of four lectures: "Contemporary Vietnamese Buddhism and its interactions with Southeast Asian societies".

The Montaigne workshop is organised within the framework of LabEx COMOD (University of Lyon), in collaboration with the "Institut de recherches philosophiques de Lyon" (IRPhiL, Lyon 3), the "École Normale Supérieure de Paris" (Ulm), the Paris Centre of the University of Chicago, the "Institut universitaire de France" (IUF) and the "République des savoirs" (UAR).Alberto Frigo, researcher currently in residence at the Collegium de Lyon, will co-host the session on 6 December.

As part of the Lille Economie Management laboratory's (LEM) seminar, Arno Riedl, researcher in residence at the Collegium, will present his research : "The Convergent and External Validity of Risk and Time Preference Elicitation Methods: Evidence from a Large Population Sample" (joint work with Paul Bokern, Jona Linde, Hans Schmeets, and Peter Werner).

As part of the SEDYL laboratory's "Linguistic Theories and Data" seminar, with a special theme this year of "Grammaticalisation", Pattie Epps, researcher in residence at the Collegium, will present her research: "Grammaticalization in Amazonia: the exuberant interplay of maintenance and change".

As part of the seminar organised by the "Groupe de recherche en philosophie du droit de Lyon", Peter Niesen, researcher in residence at the Collegium, will present his research: "Which all-subjected-principle for animals?"

As part of "Mode d'emploi, le festival des idées" at the Villa Gillet, Peter Niesen, researcher in residence at the Collegium, and Charles Girard, philosopher and author of "Délibérer entre égaux. Enquête sur l'idéal démocratique" (Vrin, 2019), will lead a debate on Restricting freedoms in the name of democracy?

As part of the "Economics and Psychology" seminar organised jointly by the Centre d'Economie de la Sorbonne (CNRS & Univ. As part of the "Rendez-vous des bibliothèques municipales de Lyon" series, Alberto Frigo, who is in residence at the Collegium - Institut d'études avancées de l'Université de Lyon during the first half of 2024-25 (in collaboration with Labex COMOD), will take part in the conference "Blaise Pascal and the Jesuits".

As part of the international conference "Emancipation through Translation? Women's Trajectories in Central and Eastern Europe (19th to 21st Century)"", Lena Magnone, researcher in residence at the Collegium, presented her research: "Breaking into modernism. Translator for Polish, Czech and Croatian modernist magazines".

As part of the "Problèmes de la modernité" seminar, organised by Labex COMOD and IRHIM, Alberto Frigo, resident at the Collegium - Institut d'études avancées de l'Université de Lyon in the 1st half of 2024-25, will present his research: "L'invention moderne du sentiment de mortalité" (The modern invention of the feeling of mortality).

Arno Riedl – a Collegium - Lyon Institute for Advanced Studies fellow this academic year – will present:"Fairness and Coordination: The Role of Fairness Ideals in Coordination Failure and Success" during the GATE seminar.

Excavations in 1880 on the island of Björkö in Sweden uncovered a tomb containing the remains of a valiant warrior. Alongside the skeleton were numerous artefacts, including a sword, a spear, an axe, arrows, and even the remains of two sacrificial horses. Recent studies in 2017 revealed that the warrior was, in fact, a woman. This article explores the representation of women warriors, from the Amazons to Lara Croft, through the lenses of archaeology and pop culture.It is presented in partnership with ALTEC.
